About Counselling

Supporting people through changes and challenges in their lives. Therapeutically untangling the early decisions that form the path of current limiting thoughts, feelings and behaviours

How I work:

My work is based on Transactional Analysis and addresses people’s reinforcing beliefs and behaviours. Together we jointly understand how you perceive your situation, what you want to change and what is holding you back. Letting go of things learnt very early on in life can be scary. It can also be very liberating. Counselling helps you challenge familiar phrases like, “That’s what always happens to me” or “That’s just the person I am” or “I have always felt like that”. Reframing, changing the meaning given to events, not necessarily the events themselves enables you to open up to new possibilities. I believe that everyone has the capacity to think for themselves, that people are fundamentally OK and that they have the capacity to change.

Areas of counselling I deal with include:

  • Abuse
  • Affairs and betrayals
  • Anger management
  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Bullying
  • Career counselling
  • Child birth
  • Depression
  • Domestic violence
  • Emotional abuse
  • Generalised anxiety
  • Low self-confidence
  • Low self-esteem
  • Panic disorder
  • Phobias
  • Physical abuse
  • Postnatal depression
  • Relationship issues
  • Self-harm
  • Separation and divorce
  • Stress
  • Termination/abortion/miscarriage
  • Trauma

About Coaching

Coaching is less about untangling problems and difficulties and is more about building a way forward and improving performance.

How I work:

The focus is on what you can change to improve things for yourself. My role is to support you in accessing and using the richness of experience, skills, expertise and intuition that people have; that you have. Working together we consider your current situation and evaluate, using a scaling technique, where you perceive you are. Looking at the present helps you to see where you have strengths and areas for development. It also provides a way to challenge perceptions and reality. Looking at the future enables you to visualise, in detail, where you want to be and to plan your change. Setting small, achievable steps, not unrealistic giant steps, enables you to put your plan into action; avoiding self-sabotage and reinforcing negative beliefs.

People find coaching beneficial in dealing with things in their personal and/or professional lives. Areas of coaching I deal with include:

  • Bullying
  • Clarifying direction
  • Goal setting
  • Improving performance
  • Improving relationships
  • Loss
  • Motivating others
  • Moving on
  • New jobs
  • New responsibilities
  • Performance anxiety
  • Personal fulfilment
  • Stress
  • Working with others

About Me

I am a qualified counsellor and executive coach. As a Member of BACP I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Ethical Guidelines for Researching Counselling and Psychotherapy (where practitioners undertake research) and subject to the Professional Conduct Procedure for the time being in force: http://www.bacp.co.uk/ ethical_framework/

I have worked with some people on defined, short-term issues(4-6 sessions) and with others over much longer periods of time (open-ended); sometimes months, occasionally years.

My career has been in the private and public sectors; leading people, projects and organisations.

We all face times when life does not run smoothly: stress, anxiety, financial worries, broken relationships, loss – to name but a few. Sometimes, finding a way though may not be straight forward, particularly when you feel that others don’t understand or don’t have time for you. Counselling and coaching offers a safe, neutral environment to help you decide what to do differently.

I found it a great help – it cleared my mind and the counsellor was good at leading, discreetly, to the hub of the problem – I felt much more able to deal with the situation
